Winter Storm Garrett

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Give us a call 24/7 at (518) 943 - 5005 for all of your restoration needs.

The first “snowstorm” of the year has arrived! Winter Storm Garrett will be New York’s first 1-inch plus snowfall storm of the season. There have been several winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories and winter storm watches issued by the National Weather Service, but what does that all mean for people and their homes and/or businesses?

A winter storm watch will be the first statement issued when a storm is approaching. This statement means there will be conditions that could be dangerous with snow, ice, and winter. Snow accumulations will only be about 1 – 3 inches.

When a storm is upgraded to a winter storm advisory, this means conditions can pose a significant inconvenience to those traveling and dangerous conditions. People should prepare their homes and businesses for snow accumulations up to 5 inches, sleet, or ice accumulations about half an inch and high winds that would hinder visibility.

The next upgrade is a winter storm warning. The same conditions as an advisory apply but snow accumulations could reach over 6 inches in a 24-hour period and could cause serious damage to buildings through winds, ice, and heavy snow.

These warnings allow people to understand how to best prepare. Check out our blog post on how to prepare for winter posted on December 20, 2021, and snow preparedness posted on December 07, 2021, for more information on how you can best weather the approaching storms.

Keep an eye on your local weather resources for updates on the storm and snow accumulations. If your home or business suffers from any damage due to Winter Storm Garrett or any winter weather this winter, do not hesitate to give us a call 24/7 for your restoration needs.

12/20/2021 (Permalink)

Winter is officially upon us which means our woodstoves and fireplaces will be kicking it into high gear. Have you inspected your heat-producing devices lately? Without proper care, clogged or dirty fireplaces and/or woodstoves can lead to serious smoke damage and even worse- an uncontrolled fire. Here is a short cleaning check list to consider for your home’s heat source:

  • Check that the chimney cap and gate are clear of any debris
  • Thoroughly clean any soot or creosote out of the flue and stovepipe
  • Clear away any old debris from the catch-pit and smoke shelf
  • If specifically using a woodstove: clean the glass and check for any cracks

It is also important to have a plan of action in the event of a chimney or home fire in place before winter arrives. If your home does suffer from any smoke or fire damage from a heating malfunction do not hesitate to give the fire/smoke restoration pros of SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties a call 24/7 at (518)943-8475.

Different Smokes for Different Folks

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Different types of fires can cause two very different types of smoke damage that could affect your home or business. There are a few components that will determine if the damage was caused by “Wet” or “Dry” smoke: the level of oxygen present during the fire, what materials are burning, and/or how fast and hot the fire burns. The restoration professionals of SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties are trained and prepared to identity and properly clean either smoke situation. Dry smoke is produced when a fire burns extremely hot causing dry particles to be deposited on any remaining structure. Cleaning of this type of smoke is typically more manageable and odor more easily remediated.  Wet smoke is the more challenging of smoke damage. This smoke is caused by a slow and smoldering fire which cause liquids to vaporize and seep into the remaining area.  Cleaning this type of smoke damage is much more complicated and involves specifically SERVPRO formulated solutions to remedy the stains and odor. Our SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties team is made up of experienced cleaners and restorers that are ready to help you after a home fire. Call SERVPRO 24/7 at (518)943-8475 for all your remediation needs- especially after fire or smoke damage.

Snow is Just Around the Corner

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

We have not seen much snow yet, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming! Before we here in Columbia and Greene Counties get hit with the first big snowstorm- let’s make sure your home and vehicles are prepared. First, water and ice proof your home. To ensure wintery elements stay outside be sure to caulk or use weather strips around doors and windows, repair any roof leaks, and insulate water lines that may run along the exterior of your home to avoid freezing. It may also be helpful to cut away any tree limbs leaning over your home that could fall in the event of a snowstorm.

It is also a great idea to prepare your car for the enviable snowstorm as well. Before the mad dash to the store for supplies happens the day before a forecasted storm, be sure to have the essentials handy. Some of the necessities are a snow shovel, windshield scraper, tire chains (if needed), and sand or road salt to give tires traction.

If your home is damaged by storms this winter, be sure to call SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties. From general storm damage to complete water and fire remediation, your local SERVPRO is here to help any day of the week, at any time. Call us 24/7 at (518) 943 – 5005.

Common Causes of Home Flooding

12/3/2021 (Permalink)

With record-high rainfall accumulations across New York State this year, it is no surprise that we are seeing more and more water-related remediation needs. Here are the most common causes of home flooding:

  • Poor basement sealing
  • Drainage tile failure
  • Debris in the gutters
  • Broken, cracked or clogged pipes
  • Hot water tank failure
  • Sump pump failure

To avoid major home damage from flooding or water you should be inspecting your home regularly to ensure all your water sources or protectants are intact. Even the smallest amount of water damage can lead to more serious mold issues if not addressed properly. Sometimes though, as we are seeing throughout the Northeast, weather is unpredictable and unrelenting. With many water issues, time is of the essence. SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties knows an immediate response to water damage helps to minimize repair, cleaning, and restoration cost and will respond to any size disaster the fastest with 24/7 emergency response.

When is the best time to have your HVAC system cleaned?

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Image of Ducts Contaminated and Clean and what could be contaminating the air ducts.

FALL! Now that the weather is cooling off, it is time to switch off the AC and allow the cool fall air to sweep through your home. This provides an excellent opportunity to have your HVAC ducts cleaned before they must kick back into gear for winter.

HVAC maintenance typically becomes “out of sight, out of mind,” but keeping your ducts clear can protect you and your family from poor air quality. Unkempt HVAC systems can be circulating dust, pet dander, outdoor allergens, and more. Keeping your system clean can also extend the life of your equipment.

However, air duct cleaning is not always necessary. Our SERVPRO Team can inspect and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your air and system.

Having your ducts cleaned by a SERVPRO professional allows your home to have the best air quality year-round.

Sewage in Hudson, NY

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

Contaminated Water with Sewage in Hudson, NY Home Basement.

SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties was called to a home in Hudson, NY, that had contaminated water backed up into their basement. Did you know there are three major types of contaminated water? The first type of contaminated water is, “Clean Water.” This water is from a clean source, but through a broken line or pipe. This water does not pose an immediate risk to personal health, but if gone untreated; can degrade into category 2 or 3. The second category of contaminated water is “Grey Water,” which is water with a significant level of contamination. This water can have a cloudy or darkened appearance. This water can come from overflowing toilets, pipes, washing machines, and dishwashers. Even from a seemingly clean source as a dishwasher, this contaminated water could contain bacteria that can be harmful if not taken care of quickly. The third category of contaminated water, which we can see in this Hudson home's basement; is “Black Water.” This water is grossly unsanitary and should be avoided at all costs. Luckily, SERVPRO of Columbia and Greene Counties has 24/7 Emergency Services and can help you with any water damage: whether category 1 or category 3. We can inspect any contaminated water to determine the type and create an action plan to restore your home safely and quickly.

Steps in a Fire Loss

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

  • Step 1- Structural Cleaning

After a smoke or fire damage, ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting and floors will often need a thorough cleaning. A technician from SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties will pretest to determine the extent of damage, and then use the specific equipment and cleaning products required to clean and protect the different surfaces found in your structure. Depending on the amount of soot, SERVPRO may even be able to reduce the cost of recovery by cleaning lighter soot deposits found on some surfaces, eliminating the expense incurred with repainting or refinishing. In other cases, SERVPRO will clean to "prepare for painting." This process deodorizes and ensures the new paint will adhere properly to the surface.

  • Step 2- Contents Cleaning

All of the restorable contents in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies and upholstery. SERVPRO begins by carefully inspecting and testing all fabrics in the structure to determine which cleaning methods are most appropriate. SERVPRO can provide wet or dry cleaning services. Additionally, all the other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, bric-a-brac and much more. Finally, SERVPRO can provide an inventory list of all "to be claimed" items if requested.

  • Step 3- Deodorization

SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties can provide specialized services that rid your home or place of business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO do not merely cover up lingering odors with a fragrance, they seek out the sources of the odor and remove them. Ask your SERVPRO to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

When it comes to your home or business, getting you back to normal quickly is our first priority. Trust the most recognized restoration vendor in the world, trust the SERVPRO professionals!

SERVPRO HVAC Cleaning Services

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

Sneezing like crazy? Coughing uncontrollably? Maybe the air you’re breathing in your home isn’t as clean as you thought. Ever wonder? Believe it or not ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. But have no fear - the SERVPRO team is here!

If your HVAC system has been running for a while without any attention it could be circulating dust, pollen, odors, dirt, debris and more. “If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold... having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published the following publications for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them.

You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned. While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.” That’s where our team comes in!

Insurance and Your Home

6/17/2019 (Permalink)

Most people learn a great deal about their homeowner’s insurance policy after there’s been an event— which is not the ideal time to have a crash course in coverage. At SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties, we work with many different policies and situations. Although the details vary from one state to another and from one policy to another, we can share some general guidelines.

You don't have to live near an ocean or river to get flood insurance. Most insurance policies don’t cover floods, which are the most common natural disaster in the nation.

It’s important to note that it is the damage to your home that’s insured, not the actual item that failed. So if a busted pipe was the source of the problem, the ruined carpet will be covered but not the broken pipe.

"Like it never even happened" SPOTLIGHT

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

This Sleepy Hollow home in Athens faced a good amount of water in the basement after some heavy rain one night and left behind some damage. SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties was called for their expertise and arrived quickly to find the entire carpet sopping wet. We immediately removed all the wet carpet from the whole basement and continued to remove any wet contents and document them. Anything left over that wasn't damaged was moved into a pod. More metering was done to find wet drywall about 2-3 feet up all surrounding walls of the basement that were then removed by making flood cuts. SERVPRO brought drying equipment to the area to dry everything so that we could begin rebuilding all the walls and trim. A new paint job on all the walls was also completed. Carpet was to be installed by another company.

Our Response to Water Damage

5/16/2019 (Permalink)

Basement of a house that had water damage on the entire first floor seeping through the floor.

If your home in the Columbia or Greene Counties region has suffered a broken pipe or water leak, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties.  We will respond to address the water damage cleanup and drying that is needed to keep your property protected and your family safe from the secondary effects, such as mold, that can occur.  Our team is the most highly trained group of professionals, and the closet in this region that will work to protect your property as quickly and as efficiently as possible.  When you call SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties, you can be certain that the owner of the company will be involved to ensure in the end that your water damage loss will seem "Like it never even happened."

When responding to a water damage emergency, we begin with a detailed inspection of your home or property, including a damage assessment. At this stage, our professionals are trying to determine the scope of the damage so that we can develop an appropriate plan of action.

We will check for the source of moisture in your home or business. The source must be stopped before any restoration or drying of the building can be successful.

If your home requires extensive restoration or cleaning, SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties can conduct an organized, efficient move-out to protect your belongings from further damage.

Our highly trained technicians will begin the water removal process almost immediately. Depending on the amount of water, we may use powerful submersible pumps in addition to industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums. Removing most of the water helps reduce drying time and helps prevent secondary water damage and mold and bacterial growth.

Once the excess water has been removed, the floors and walls may appear dry, but a quick inspection will reveal they are wet to the touch. Nearly all building materials, like wood, drywall, and flooring materials, are porous and therefore retain water. This retained water can cause the materials to break down, warp, or cause mold damage.

Our Professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your home or business. We’ll carefully monitor the progress using moisture meters until the materials return to acceptable drying goals.

Importance of Sump Pumps

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

The above picture shows a sump pump in a basement pit.

If your home is not equipped with a sump pump, it is a very good idea to install one to prevent water damage in your home or business.

A sump pump is placed in a pit made in the basement floor that serves as a spot for water to collect before collect on the floor. Once the water fill up in the pit, it starts to push up the float activator, similar to one in a toilet tank. This starts the pump and begins to suck the water out and push it through a pipe or hose and out away from the house. Most pumps are installed with a check valve in between the pipe and pump which keeps water from flowing back into the pit.

Installing and having a sump pump will help you in the long run and will also prevent mold and mildew in your basement. Keeping your basement dry is important to prevent the presence of mold and mildew which can cause a lot of other issues. Homes with working sump pumps tend to see an increase in resale value of the home. Make sure your sump pump is checked and maintained regularly to prevent malfunctions and flooding of your basement.

If you experience a flood in your basement, or have any questions about preventing water damage, please call SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties at (518) 943-5005 today!

Taking Precautions

SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties handles water damages everyday and knows prompt action is required to prevent mold growth. Mold is more likely to spread when an environment has been subject to moisture for a long period of time.

Health Threats

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, or poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Importance of Lead Testing

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Red=Lead

Lead paint testing is a simple process that most home buyers should perform before purchasing an older home. Lead can be present in older homes built in early to mid 1900s. It is very harmful and can cause serious health problems. SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties can assist you through the lead paint sampling process.

The test is simple. If the test turns red, the paint has lead. The test take no more than a couple of minutes. As you can see in this photo, the sample turned red which means lead is present in the paint of this house.

If you have a positive lead paint test, or would like assistance in conducting one, contact your local SERVPRO of Columbia & Greene Counties at (518) 943-5005 to see how our expert restoration technicians can help.

Importance of Smoke Detectors

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke detectors are said to be the most least expensive way of having an early warning to a potentially deadly fire in your home. Detectors should be installed on every floor in your home in each bedroom. Do install them on the ceiling of your home or on the wall close to the ceiling.

DO:

  • Maintain according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Test your smoke alarms every month using test button.
  • Install interconnected smoke alarms.
  • Replace batteries yearly.
  • Install using house wiring with battery back-up.
  • Replace all alarms every 10 years.
  • Have a plan or route of escape.
  • Have a meeting place outside your home.

A smoke detector is a critical component to detecting early signs of a fire in your home or business. It can mean the difference between life and death and how quickly you can exit and contact first responders to extinguish the disaster.
